Perfectionism and emotional reactions to perfect and flawed achievements: Satisfaction and pride only when perfect

چکیده
Perfectionists have excessively high standards and thus are prone to experience dissatisfaction and embarrassment. But what if they achieve perfection? The present study investigated in a sample of 194 university students how self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism predicted emotional reactions (satisfaction, dissatisfaction, pride, embarrassment) to imagined situations in which students achieved either perfect or flawed outcomes. Self-oriented perfectionism showed positive correlations with satisfaction and pride after perfect outcomes, and positive correlations with dissatisfaction and embarrassment after flawed outcomes. In contrast, socially prescribed perfectionism showed positive correlations with dissatisfaction after both perfect and flawed outcomes. Moreover, socially prescribed perfectionism moderated the relationship of self-oriented perfectionism with satisfaction and pride after perfect outcomes: self-oriented perfectionism predicted higher satisfaction and pride only in students with low levels of socially prescribed perfectionism. The findings show that perfectionists high in self-oriented perfectionism, but low in socially prescribed perfectionism may experience more pride and greater satisfaction than nonperfectionists, but only when they achieve perfection. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Perfectionism and Depression: Vulnerabilities Nurses Need to Understand
Striving for excellence is an admirable goal. Adaptive or healthy perfectionism can drive ambition and lead to extraordinary accomplishments. High-achieving people often show signs of perfectionism. However, maladaptive, unhealthy, or neurotic perfectionism, where anything less than perfect is unacceptable, can leave individuals vulnerable to depression. In both personal and professional relati...
متن کاملHaplotype Block Partitioning and tagSNP Selection under the Perfect Phylogeny Model
Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most usual form of polymorphism in human genome.Analyses of genetic variations have revealed that individual genomes share common SNP-haplotypes. Theparticular pattern of these common variations forms a block-like structure on human genome. In this work,we develop a new method based on the Perfect Phylogeny Model to identify haplo...
متن کاملOn the inverse maximum perfect matching problem under the bottleneck-type Hamming distance
Given an undirected network G(V,A,c) and a perfect matching M of G, the inverse maximum perfect matching problem consists of modifying minimally the elements of c so that M becomes a maximum perfect matching with respect to the modified vector. In this article, we consider the inverse problem when the modifications are measured by the weighted bottleneck-type Hamming distance. We propose an alg...
متن کاملOn the oriented perfect path double cover conjecture
An oriented perfect path double cover (OPPDC) of a graph $G$ is a collection of directed paths in the symmetric orientation $G_s$ of $G$ such that each arc of $G_s$ lies in exactly one of the paths and each vertex of $G$ appears just once as a beginning and just once as an end of a path. Maxov{'a} and Ne{v{s}}et{v{r}}il (Discrete Math. 276 (2004) 287-294) conjectured that ...
متن کاملThe (non-)existence of perfect codes in Lucas cubes
A Fibonacci string of length $n$ is a binary string $b = b_1b_2ldots b_n$ in which for every $1 leq i < n$, $b_icdot b_{i+1} = 0$. In other words, a Fibonacci string is a binary string without 11 as a substring. Similarly, a Lucas string is a Fibonacci string $b_1b_2ldots b_n$ that $b_1cdot b_n = 0$. For a natural number $ngeq1$, a Fibonacci cube of dimension $n$ is denoted by $Gamma_n$ and i...
